This is a wonderful flame mahogany empire carved sofa that dates from the Civil War era in nice original condition dating from the 1850’s to 1860’s. It has been reupholstered, most likely years ago, in a red fabric that shows some soil but no tears or other damage but you will most likely want to reupholster it. The frame is all flame mahogany, which is gorgeous, and it amazes me that we still find these gorgeous old sofas right here in New England, which of course is where they all came from originally. It has a hand-carved mahogany crest in the center of a swooping design, carved forearms with leaves carved around the center of the curved arms, wonderful carved details on the feet, and a beautiful flame mahogany veneer section on the front that has a couple of veneer spots that we will correct before shipping. The overall size is 82 inches wide on the outside of the arms, and 64 inches on the inside of the arms. It is 25 inches deep from front to back, 34 inches to the top of the carved crest and 19 inches to the top of the seat. This is a great-looking period Civil War era empire sofa, and don’t forget that we will fix the two little bad spots on the veneer so you won’t even be able to tell it was there. This is a gorgeous little petite solid mahogany shield-back settee that looks like it dates from around the 1880s. What a dainty little thing, that must go into the bedroom by a window or in front of the bed. It has scrolled arms, solid mahogany throughout, antique gold highlights along the multi-molded top and along the scrolled arms and down around the fluted, reeded legs. It has a light yellow crushed velour fabric, although some of the gimp or edge molding is a bit frazzled and could be easily replaced. It measures 42 inches wide at the seat, 22 inches deep, 30 inches high to the top of the back and 17 inches high to the seat. It’s such a cute little piece! We will crate it up and ship it to you for only $285, within our normal delivery area.

This is a beautiful pre-Civil War hand-carved Federal-type sofa with claw feet, in the Duncan Phyfe style dating from the 1850’s. It is very unusual, and we haven’t before had the pleasure of owning this particular model. It has an upholstered back, along with a wonderful flame mahogany raised panel center, a hand-carved oval crest in the center, carved rosettes, and carved arms that look like cornucopias, full of fruits and flowers. It comes out into a curved arm with what looks like eagle heads carved into the arms on both sides, into the rosettes, and scroll flowers coming down, then there is an oxbow-style curved skirt of all flame mahogany. There are also gorgeous detailed carved claw feet with pineapples and flowers and such. This sofa is just a great example of pre-Civil War cabinet craftsmanship. Of course, it has been reupholstered years ago in a light antique beige fabric, which is good and usable. The frame itself appears to be in its original dark reddish brown finish. The overall size is 72 inches wide on the outside of the arms, 58 inches wide on the inside of the arms, from front to back is 25 inches deep, 41.5 inches to the top of the crest, 33 inches high to the top of the arm, and the height to the seat is 22 inches high. A great-looking Federal style sofa, and you don’t want to mess around — this sofa will be gone before you finish thinking about it! Found right here in New England, this beautiful sofa is still in great original condition after 150 years, and features flame mahogany and what we believe is the original crushed velour upholstery, all in nice shape. This is a wonderful pre-Civil War flame mahogany period empire loveseat or sofa that dates from the 1850s or ‘60s. I’ve never gotten over the amazement at how many of this style of sofa we’ve had the good luck to find up here in New England, still in good original condition, like this one we’re selling today. It has flame mahogany with ribbon molding across the base, and some of the ribbon is missing, but we may have some in the shop that we can use to fix this, if you ask us at point of sale. It has carved scrolled arms in flame mahogany, a beautiful flame mahogany crested back with hand-carved roses right in the center, with a shield crest, and applied carvings on the outside, all hand-carved. It has what I believe is the original crushed velour fabric upholstery, which is an antique greenish with a yellow tint. It’s in really nice shape, although people usually disassemble the upholstery and replace it with new fabric with buttons and such, and these babies usually turn out really beautifully when that’s done. The condition of this one is really, really nice except for the small piece of molding that’s missing. The overall size is 82 inches wide on the outside of the arm, 60 inches wide on the inside of the arm, 28 inches deep from front to back, 36 inches high to the top of the carved rose crest, and 18 inches high to the seat. This is a wonderful dark reddish-brown original finish period empire hand-carved oversized sofa dating from the 1850s. It was found in a local estate, and as usual, I can’t get over how many of these empire sofas are found in New England, not to mention found in beautiful condition, like this one. This particular sofa has darkened over the last 160 years to a dark reddish-brown patina. It has flame mahogany throughout the rose skirted back, around the serpentine candy-ribbon molded front, and there are beautiful carvings on both forearms, which are curved and all finished off with a carved, cutout empire style foot that still retains its original casters. The upholstery, I believe, is the original green crushed velour, and is in good shape. It shows some little water spots here and there, but is overall in nice condition. The crest on the back has a hand-carved rose in the center with a shield carved underneath. There is a meaning behind this that I can’t remember at the moment, but would be a nice research project! The overall size is 81 inches across the arms, 61 inches on the inside of the arms, 25 inches deep, 33 inches to the top of the carved crest, and 17 inches high to the seat, and 25 inches to the top of the arm. This is a gorgeous solid black walnut hand-carved grape and leaf berry cluster loveseat that dates from the 1860s-’70s era. A sweet-looking sofa, with a frame of all solid black walnut, it has its original patina in a nice amber-walnut color that shows off the gorgeous hand-carved cluster on top of leaves, berries, nuts and fruits, all intact. The front of the sofa is all carved, too, with a serpentine skirt, dainty little cabriole legs and carved forearms. The upholstery is a dark brown velour with buttons and tucks in the back. We’re not sure if it’s original or not, but it certainly shows some age. It does have a few little water spots that may or may not come out with upholstery cleaning. There are no rips or tears. It measures 67 inches wide on the outside, 51 inches wide on the inside. Front to back is 30 inches deep, 41 inches high to top of crest, 23 inches high to the top of the arm, 17 inches high to the seat. Other than the small spots on the upholstery, this sofa is in wonderful condition, and the frame is all nice and tight. It will cost only $325 to have this loveseat shipped to your home, within the normal delivery area.

This beautiful solid mahogany Duncan Phyfe Federal-style sofa was made by the Kimball Furniture Co. out of Indiana. This sofa is beautiful. The owner of the estate it came from said he believes they bought it about eight years ago for somewhere over $2000.00, and it doesn’t look like anyone has ever sat in it. Upholstered in a splendid cranberry Federal-style striped floral fabric with mauve floral designs and antique mallard greens and golds, it features a triple cushion seat, and a wonderful carved scrolled front with the big detailed wooden claw foot. It has the Duncan Phyfe curved or sleigh back with two urns carved with fruits and vegetables. The overall size is 89 inches across the outside and 65 inches on inside. Front to back is 30 inches deep. Height of the arms is 29 inches high and height to the back is 36 inches high. It has rolled arms just like the original period style, and the wood is a dark, rich reddish-brown stain. The overall condition is excellent, and it really must be seen to be appreciated. This will take your breath away: A beautiful solid mahogany Federal carved period sofa with awesome detail that dates from the 1840s-‘50s era. This sofa has a great look: someone reupholstered it years ago in an antique green crushed velour fabric, and because of the curved design arms, they even made the round pillows that set underneath the arms. It appears to have a re-varnished clear coat over the original old patina. This sofa is unbelievable. Firstly, it has really strong carved claw feet with fruits and nuts and berries carved off its wings. It also has floral blocks of carving against a plain skirt, then up around the curved arms there is a cornucopia of carved fruits and berries throughout the entire arm, which is very unusual. We‘ve never had a sofa with this exact carving. On the back, where there is usually a different style of wood, this one shows a lot more wood than normally. And it has, right across the top, a hint of the Duncan Phyfe style — but is truly Federal — on a carved crest rail of solid mahogany and hand carved, a basket with incredible detail. The condition of this piece, after 170 years, is incredible. It always amazes us how something can be in such wonderful condition after so long. It measures 75 inches wide from arm to arm, and inside the arms is 58 inches wide. Front to back, it measures 25 inches deep, 35 inches to the top of the carved crest rail, and it is 30 inches high to the arm. This is a stunning sofa, and we are very excited to be able to offer you this true piece of pre-Civil War era furniture making. This is a very nice investment piece. As you can see in the photos, someone has braced up the back legs with metal plates because they tend to be fragile, however, this sofa is all tight and sturdy. It dates within the last 10-25 years. It has tons and tons of buttons and pleats throughout, and they all appear to be there, though we have to be honest and say that we have not counted the buttons to make sure. This sofa is in wonderful condition with no rips or tears, and features cushion button pleated arms with the brass antique tacks that goes down through the face, and has buttons and pleats everywhere—across the skirts, across the top of the sofa, on the side of the sofa, on the inside of the arms, on the inside of the back, everywhere. It is also accented with brass antique tack trim on the front. There is a little bit of bagginess to the leather on one side, but I think that it looks more dramatic in the photos than in real life. Overall, the sofa is in very good condition, and the color is fantastic. This is a very comfortable three-cushion Chesterfield sofa, in the masculine green with black accent color. This sofa measures 76 inches long, 27 inches high from the floor to the back of the sofa, 32 inches deep, and 17 inches from the floor to the seat. For the discerning buyer looking for a nice original-finish, Civil War-era flame mahogany sofa, this is it. This example of a period empire style hand carved sofa is in gorgeous shape.

Featuring a flame mahogany multi-shaped molded crest rail in back, hand carving on the forearms of the pillar arms and triple-molded ribs on front skirt, this sofa also has cutout fancy legs with the original brass casters. It was reupholstered years ago in a green crushed velour fabric, which is in good condition except for a tear on the high point on the left hand side of the seat, measuring about 2.5 inches by 1 inch. It is amazing that the original dark-reddish brown patina is still so stunning after 140 years.

This is a large couch, 84 inches wide on the outside, 60 inches wide inside of the arms, and 26 inches front to back. At the high point on the back of the fancy flame mahogany crest it is 34.5 inches tall, and the height to the top of the seat is 19 inches tall. This sofa will add a touch of Americana to the right room. It will cost $385 to ship this piece of Americana to your home, within the normal shipping area.
