This Hunzinger rocker is in excellent original condition and would make a wonderful investment piece…Read More
This is a very rare and unusual barley twist platform rocker made and designed by George Hunzinger back in the 1880s era. I’ve been in the antique business for more than 40 years and have handled tons of Hunzinger furniture, but have never had this model. It’s all tiger-sawn oak, which is very unusual, as these rockers are almost always maple or mahogany. It has a pillow back with a honeycomb post curved center, which is above the upholstered shield back, solid oak dowels supporting the back, barley twist posts that come out with a curved design around the crest rail down into the seats, with a cross rail of barley twist along the back and also on the platform rocker itself. The arms are really unique: they are cutout, upholstered and have a button finial top, all of solid oak. They have a U-shaped, barley twist design, almost like the letter J, so there are two coming and going on both sides, then underneath is another barley twist post. On the bottom are the original casters and then the famous Hunzinger platform spring in the center. There is very little of the label left, but we tried to get a photo of it. You can see where the label was, since they are always on the bottom of the flat surface under the platform, where it has set for the past 130 years. The finish is dark oak and all original, and we believe the antique mustard-colored velour fabric may also be original, and is in outstanding condition. The chair measures 25 inches across the arms, 22 inches deep on the seat, 41 inches high to the top of the crest rail, and 19 inches high to the seat, even though it sits at a slant. This Hunzinger rocker is a great investment piece, since it is virtually untouched. The only repair we made is that we glued a tiny split on the base, which can not be detected. It will cost only $245 to have this chair shipped to your home, within our normal delivery area.
