Made of sturdy walnut, this Victorian library table features many original touches that make it a Civil War-era treasure.…Read More
This is a beautiful solid walnut Victorian library table, carved throughout, in its original color and finish with a new addition of a red felt top. Dating from the Civil War era of the 1860s or ‘70s, a lot of people use these as telephone tables in a Victorian home, and this model features a hand cut dovetail drawer that is all divided for lots of space for ink bottles or goose-feather tipped pens. It shows all the old stains from the last 140 years, which adds incredible charm. There are a few cracks in the drawer bottom, but we wanted to leave it all original. The case of this writing desk has the extra wide beveled edge molding, and the shapely semi-circle ends, a hallmark of furniture from this period, and has a gorgeous teardrop handle on the front, which most likely is not original. Has the typical block molding with the fluted, reeded incise-carved legs. The stretcher on this piece is amazing. It is dainty and stylish, but also sturdy because everybody’s feet rest on the stretcher when they’re writing out checks for their online antique purchases. The base has all kinds of finials and turnings, all original, and the patina is lovely from 140 years ago because only antique walnut can age like this. There are a few nicks and dings, but is in great condition. Our owner is always surprised as how well Victorian walnut pieces age. Walnut furniture was usually found in better-than-average homes, and was usually kept in the home, not stored in the barn or the cellar, because they were pricey items. Overall size is 42 inches wide, 25 inches deep and 29.5 inches tall. All we’ve done is made sure it is tight and strong because horse hide glue was used, and that does tend to crystallize over the years. We have also replaced the worn out felt, but it looks identical to the original felt from the 1860s. It will cost $285 to have this historic piece shipped to your home, within the normal delivery area.
