This will take your breath away: A beautiful solid mahogany Federal carved period sofa with awesome detail that dates from the 1840s-‘50s era. This sofa has a great look: someone reupholstered it years ago in an antique green crushed velour fabric, and because of the curved design arms, they even made the round pillows that set underneath the arms. It appears to have a re-varnished clear coat over the original old patina. This sofa is unbelievable. Firstly, it has really strong carved claw feet with fruits and nuts and berries carved off its wings. It also has floral blocks of carving against a plain skirt, then up around the curved arms there is a cornucopia of carved fruits and berries throughout the entire arm, which is very unusual. We‘ve never had a sofa with this exact carving. On the back, where there is usually a different style of wood, this one shows a lot more wood than normally. And it has, right across the top, a hint of the Duncan Phyfe style — but is truly Federal — on a carved crest rail of solid mahogany and hand carved, a basket with incredible detail. The condition of this piece, after 170 years, is incredible. It always amazes us how something can be in such wonderful condition after so long. It measures 75 inches wide from arm to arm, and inside the arms is 58 inches wide. Front to back, it measures 25 inches deep, 35 inches to the top of the carved crest rail, and it is 30 inches high to the arm. This is a stunning sofa, and we are very excited to be able to offer you this true piece of pre-Civil War era furniture making. This is a very nice investment piece. As you can see in the photos, someone has braced up the back legs with metal plates because they tend to be fragile, however, this sofa is all tight and sturdy.
