With its intricate and unique carvings and magnificent size, this oak bookcase from the 1880s must be seen to be believed

This is one of the better and nicer antique heavily carved oak bookcases we’ve seen that’s truly a bookcase, not a wardrobe made into a bookcase, with a hand-cut dovetail drawer in the base. What a beautiful model from the 1880s: has heavy crown molding on top, all leaf carved, a big shield right in the center with a carving of solid wood of a balance scale!!! Indicating that it may have come out of a mining or pharmacy operation, with a collection of carvings on the top. It features leaf carving on the outside corners, then it has big barley twist solid oak posts going down each side to leaf carving on the base, and is all finished off with bun feet. The hand-cut dovetail drawer has carving all across the front, and a big open pierce cut leaf handle right dead center. The bottom doors have several items carved on it, such as a tambourine, castanets and trumpets on the left hand picture frame panel. On the right hand side, it has construction items like part of a Greek column, and contractors’ squares carved into the wood. It is very different and unique. The door molding is also leaf carved. One of the panes of glass is the original wavy glass and the other has been replaced. It has three adjustable shelves, has a little bit of molding missing on the top, on one of the leaves, which we will color in, and on the picture frame molding on the door there is a piece missing which we will repair before shipping. It’s a great size: 54 inches at the widest point, 20 inches at deepest point, the bookcase section itself is only 15 inches deep. It is 95 inches tall so it will fit into a regular size house. It comes with a key. The carving on the doors are fantastic, and the pictures will show you how unique and intricate this is. Finished in a dark oak stain, the quality of the finish is extremely nice for an item of this age. There is a crack in the drawer bottom, but other than that is in really good condition. Our owner believes someone re-varnished it along the years. There is also a crack in one of the plain side panels, which doesn’t affect the integrity of the structure. This is a great investment piece. It will cost $485 to have this item shipped to your home, within the normal delivery area.
