1930′s Furniture: Modern Style Furnishing and Things

From the year 1919 to 1939, around 4 million homes were built and this enabled people to purchase 1930′s furniture that could furnish their homes with the latest looks that were “in style”. People moved to the suburbs and enjoyed living in their dream homes. The 1930s was an era that witnessed many historical events such as the Spanish Civil War, abdication of Edward VII to marry Wallis Simpson, and Hitler’s invasion of Poland that eventually made the war break out. Influential French artistic movements, Hollywood, and Revolutionary designers made a great impact in furniture design.
Modernism or “modern” dominated the era as well as clean streamlined shapes. The art deco style still dominated the era with colors of red, black, and silver plus animal prints. The style of furniture consisted of boxy shapes, Bakelite (a type of plastic used for casings of everything during the time), chrome, modernism, and art deco. Tudor, Jacobean, and Georgian historical styles were famous. The major influences of 1930′s furniture were modernism, art deco, and Scandinavian design. Famous designers for 1930′s furniture were Alvar Aalto who designed specialized arm chairs and stools, George Nelson who designed a range of 1930s household furniture consisting of sofas, chairs, cabinets, lamps, and clocks. Other prominent designers were Clarice Cliff and Keith Murray.
Many homes had cabinets with glass doors where china was displayed, and the three-piece suite was invented and became popular. Houses had two arm chairs and a sofa. A common material for seating during this era was the Moquette, a dense wool fabric. Brown leather arm chairs were also fashionable as well as beds dressed in satin eiderdown quilt. Beige and coffee colors were in style, as well as pale greens and blues with occasional pink hues when it comes to 1930′s furniture.
Roaring 1920′s Furniture for Nostalgia

1920′s furniture was all about being very utilitarian– efficiency, functionality, economy and cleanliness. The 1920s was an era that was known as The Roaring Twenties or The Jazz Age where architects and designers alike recommended simplicity for homes both inside and outside. This period was known for its decadence but ended with the Wall Street Crash. In Europe, they plunged into economic depression.
These furniture pieces saved so much space because of their practicality, thus making smaller living spaces more spacious. Kitchens, living rooms, and dining rooms open onto each other creating a larger space. Furthermore, built in bookcases, side boards, breakfast nooks, all reduced the amount of space they occupied. This kind of furniture has a nostalgic air to them that can make any small room cozy. This was the period of art deco popularity and prevalence of modernism. They are all about streamlined shapes that are geometric and angular, which make these pieces glamorous because of the Hollywood flair in them. Cocktail cabinets were essential pieces in the homes and 1920′s furniture were made mostly of chrome, glass tiles, and mirror.
Influences of this period were travel, art deco and modernism, and early Hollywood where the glamorous world of the silver screen was brought into life by popularity of smoking paraphernalia that was fashionable at the time.
Biedermeier furniture was also “in” and became associated with the words “simple”, “homey”, and “bourgeois”. The neoclassical style also made its comeback and mahogany, oak, and walnut were used to build furniture. Egyptian style also became the sub-style of 1920′s furniture upon the discovery of Tutatankhamen’s tomb in 1922 when all things Egyptian became a trend. Spanish architecture also dominated the homes in Beverly Hills during this era. Mediterranean and Spanish Revival 1920′s furniture filled these lavish houses.

1940s Furniture: An Ode to the Victorian Era

If the house you live in is a Victorian-style type of residence, it is best to furnish it with 1940s furniture.
The decade of the1940s was not known for its aesthetic development or cultural revolution. It is known as the time when the Second World War took place. For the first half of the 1940s, the occurrence of World War II overshadowed everything. Its impact on human consciousness extended to all parts of the globe. As for the second half of the decade, it was a time when the repercussions of the said conflict lingered on. The dire circumstances that surrounded the 1940s was a distinct contrast to the bright world that 1940s furniture occupied.
The 1940s furniture in the United States belonged in a realm where bright colors adorned the walls and floors. The American decorating style of the decade obviously did not reflect the raging war: it was bright and vibrant. 1940s furniture in American homes consisted of Victorian antique furniture. Beds, regardless of their size, had intricately carved headboards. In the office, one can find a matched pair of tufted Queen Anne armchairs. Dining chairs with rich dark stain and elegant upholstery can be found in the dining room. A main room can even feature an antique brass 12-arm chandelier. All these 1940s furniture are often enclosed in a space with pastel curtains, pale carpets and bright walls. Obviously, homes during that time did not give off the strained vibe evoked by the battles raging in the fields.
Most of the 1940s furniture that can be found are often in dark stains. The furniture item often reflects the natural color of the wood from which it was made. The dark shades of 1940s furniture is a great thing, as it complements the brightness that dominated the space.

1930s Furniture: A Highlight of the Decade

1930s furniture is a great addition to any home. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing but they also serve as a silver lining in an otherwise turbulent time.
The 1930s carved itself in history as an unfortunate period. It was the decade that immediately followed the largest Stock Market crash in the United States, so it was an era known for its dire economic situation. The Great Depression was not the only low point during that time; there were a handful of wars which occurred throughout the world. The most tragic of all was the Second World War, which started in the end of the decade. Despite these depressing times, the home style of that period served as a highlight. 1930s furniture was one good point in such a deplorable time.
1930s furniture was known for their size and the material used to make it with: wood. There was one point in the decade when homeowners could afford oak furniture. English oak was very popular at that time, but it was eventually replaced with veneer and decorated plywood. 1930s furniture also often reflected various styles, such as Tudor, Jacobean and Georgian. The signature style of furniture during that time was boxy and geometric.
So if you want a touch of 1930s furniture in your own home, prepare a huge space for the basic furnishings. Genuine 1930s antiques are guaranteed to be bulky; you would need to allot more space than usual for them. Pieces such as a walnut smoking stand, server bar, carved cedar chest and a mahogany Chippendale lady's writing desk and vanity will require a considerable space to fit.
Look for a reliable source of antiques. The furniture items they sell must have top notch quality worth of your investment. When buying 1930s furniture, do a little research.

Why You Should Consider Buying 1920s Furniture

If you are in the process of refurnishing your old-style home, you should seriously consider getting 1920s furniture.
The 1920s is a remarkable era in history. The decade known as the Roaring Twenties or the Jazz Age, this era is a time of historical significance. While various wars occurred all over the world including Europe, the United States of America struggled with its own share of challenges. The 1920s was the time of Prohibition, when alcohol was rendered illegal. This resulted in the prevalence of organized crime that specialized in the smuggling and bootlegging of liquor, making personalities such as Al Capone notorious figures. If you were to buy 1920s furniture, you will be transported into this historically complex yet very intriguing period just by staying at your own home.
The 1920s was also a culturally interesting time. The Jazz Age would not be what it was without its signature fashion. The flapper style dominated during that era, and women all over the United States embraced this new trend. They maintained a short bob, strutted around in shapeless shift dresses that had less-then-feminine silhouettes. They hung out in speak easies, smoking with the use of a long cigarette holder. With your home filled with 1920s furniture, there is no need to travel back in time to embrace and enjoy the style of the flapper decade. You can have the 1920s furniture used by the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda in your own abode.
From intricate glass ceiling lamps to mahogany china cabinets, from two-piece parlor suite sets to a queen-size oak carved bed, make sure they are real 1920s furniture before purchasing. If you want to purchase authentic 1920s furniture, look for a reliable dealer of antiques that specializes in the specific style of that time.
