- 17102 Custom Handmade Maple Chippendale Ball and Claw Carved Desk
We are pleased to be offering today this wonderful example of cabinetmaking form the 1870s to 1880s. It is a beautiful desk that is all handmade or bench made. It has carved cabriole ball and claw talon feet on all four feet, brass spindle and Maplewood gallery that is all complete, a heavy thick carved maple lid that opens to reveal a detailed cubby hole multi-drawer interior and even those drawers are hand cut dovetail. The interior has four regular drawers, two tall skinny drawers that go on both sides of the fancy cut out gallery top. The biggest problem with this desk is that someone took the original hinges out and replaced them with some old brass hinges that are not original. When you look at the front you can see the deep dish carving on the solid wood lid with breadboard ends. IT has pull out trays that support the lid. The top drawer is blocked and has carving on the ends where the brass Chippendale hardware is. There is deep dish carving in the center where the key escutcheon is. It has rope braided edge molding. The cabinetmaker was very patient and paid attention to detail when making this. One of the legs are loose, but we will tighten it prior to shipping. This cabinet is 120-140 years old. I do not see a maker’s name anywhere, but I am sure the maker must have signed it somewhere. Shipping starts at $285 for a driveway delivery in our normal area. Please contact us prior to purchase to confirm that you are in our normal area.
